Professor James Kent and the Founding of Columbia Law School

220 Years of Legal Excellence

A Legacy of Scholarly Pursuits and Legal Innovation

Established in 1923 by the Faculty of Law in memory of James Kent, who in 1793 became the first Professor of Law at Columbia, the institution has a rich history of legal scholarship and innovation.

Kent, an influential jurist who served as a judge on the New York Supreme Court, is credited with shaping the development of American law. His "Commentaries on American Law," published in 1826, became a foundational text for legal education and practice.

Today, Columbia Law School continues to honor Kent's legacy by providing its students with an unparalleled legal education. The school offers a wide range of academic programs, including the Juris Doctor (J.D.), Master of Laws (LL.M.), and Doctor of Juridical Science (J.S.D.) degrees. Columbia Law School is also home to numerous research centers and institutes that are dedicated to advancing legal knowledge and scholarship.
